EXCERPT

Blackness surrounded him, its endless pools of ink swallowing him whole. He couldn’t see his hand in front of his face, but he felt the terror seeping through his skin, past his bones and making its way down to his very soul.

James knew he was in the throes of one of his nightmares again. He could never make out a thing, just knew the feeling it left him with.

He tried to make himself wake up, but couldn’t find his way out. The feeling that someone was coming for him caused panic to swell and his heart to accelerate, threatening to break free from his chest.

Not knowing what was coming, fear lacerating his insides, James started to run blindly. In his bed, his feet kicked out wildly, tangling in the linens and ratcheting up his terror, because to James, he was trapped.

His breathing labored and coming in short, sharp bursts, James cried out at the same time his body bolted upright in the bed. Sweat beaded on his brow and dampened his skin, his clothes suctioned to his body uncomfortably. He was clammy and winded, shaken, but he already felt better for knowing he was free from that awful feeling of suffocating terror that had threatened to overtake him just moments ago.

Scrubbing his hands down his face, James breathed deeply, hanging his head to his chest while his body calmed. As his adrenalin levels normalized, and he began to feel more like himself, James gave a final sigh of relief. Stabbing his fingers through his hair, he was readying himself to try to go back to sleep when he looked up and choked on his breath.

His entire body went rigid in an instant. His breathing, his heartbeat. Everything ceased to work. In the next instant James threw himself back against his headboard, fear gripping him once again.

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He would chance rubbing his eyes to be sure his vision was true, only he was too frightened of what he would find once he opened them again.

Every so often while eating, Armando casually glanced in Daniela’s direction. However, he soon became distracted by his meal. After what seemed to be just a few moments, Armando was surprised when he looked up and saw Daniela walking directly toward him. She wore a matching black linen button-down blouse and wrap skirt with black espadrilles. Their ankle ties accentuated the firmness of her bare, sculptured calves. The arm openings of her sleeveless blouse were cut inwardly at an angle, revealing the graceful line of her shoulders. The skirt hit right below the knee, but as Daniela walked toward him, her movements caused the split to flap open, revealing a provocative and ample view of her inner thigh with each step. Daniela’s hair was loosely secured, with soft tendrils surrounding her face and lightly brushing against her neck. The slightly tousled look only enhanced her beauty. Armando stared helplessly, his mouth open. She stopped directly in front of him and held out a cocktail napkin. Armando could feel her perfume penetrating his body. Slowly, he accepted the napkin.

 

“Sssshhhh,” she whispered, while gently placing a finger over her full parted lips when he started to speak. Then she turned and seductively sauntered away.

Without breathing, Armando visually followed the languid sway of her hips as Daniela walked through the restaurant and toward the front exit.

When she finally stepped beyond their view, Conner gasped, “Wow!”

Armando remained breathless as he continued to grip the folded napkin.

“Well,” Conner pressed, “open it. What did she write?”

Still in a trance, Armando unfolded the napkin and placed it on the table. The only writing was a telephone number.

“Double wow,” Conner said. “Be still my heart!”

“My heart is not the problem.”

“Then it’s a good thing we’re leaving in the morning.”

“Morning might not be soon enough,” Armando moaned. “I can still smell her perfume!”

Conner inhaled deeply. “Oh man, me too. Did you see her skirt?”

“Who could miss it?” Armando exhaled loudly before asking, “Now how am I ever going to make it through the night? It’s going to be even more difficult knowing she’s right next door.” “How about taking a cold shower?” Conner suggested.

Disappointed, Armando nodded in agreement. “Cold shower it is.”

Review:

I hate to start with a review saying a book was cute but this one was.  The whole premise of a time traveling witch with the help of an ex-boyfriend PI and her book editor to solve mysteries is just way to appealing for  me.  I blame Harlie for the witch reference.  The bonus is the paranormal element that is expertly woven in, too.  Ms. Foster does a great job of making the paranormal believable and not over the top.  You never know who works at the corner store or what the woman in front of you in the carpool line really does all day.

I’m not going to give away much the way rehashing the plot and the players because you really need to read this book.  You get the whole package regarding plot, characterizations, world building and dialogue are wonderful.  Ms. Foster has a way with words and the dialogue spoken between her characters is awesome.   They are believable even if this is a paranormal.  You get a sense of who they are and what’s makes them tick.  The only person that didn’t get that much treatment was Jack.  Even in the time travel aspect, I never felt like I got to know him.  I’m sure that Ms. Foster has a reason and she is writing the next book.  😉

The time travel is great.  I love how the author uses this a plot device and it brings the mystery and intrigue together.  🙂  Plus, it was fun to read.  I love time travel book and this one is a good one.  There is enough intrigue, mystery and plot twists to keep you on your toes.  I will caution you though that the romance is not the point of this book. Yes, we get a bit of it but with two men in the mix, Ms. Foster does a great job of not throwing the romance in our faces.  The book is perfect just the way it is.  Great plot, believable/relatable characters and enough mystery to keep you guessing.

I highly recommend Time Spell and this was a great way to start a series. 🙂  Don’t miss it.
