Seventeen-year-old Emmy O’Connell is the epitome of a hot mess.

Her boyfriend’s been shipped out of town to some boarding school four states away. Her step-douche is constantly drunk and badgering her. And then there’s her good-ole-mom… The lady is nothing more than a miserable shell of a woman. She’s turned off all of her feelings and her ability to be a good mother as well, leaving poor Emmy and her four year old brother Jamie to suffer. Life couldn’t get much worse, right?

Enter the elusive, cocky, and oh-so-broody Jack Hartman…

The jerk cousin of her boyfriend becomes Emmy’s worst nightmare…times ten. He’s cruel. He’s insensitive. But he also has this strange little ability over her – he makes her weak in the knees with thea single touch. No matter how miserable or amazing Jack makes her feel, Emmy can’t seem to deny him, especially when he takes on the role of her protector –her pseudo-knight in a black leather coat.

A knight who also happens to ride in on his black Harley, instead of a white horse…

And to make a bad situation worse…

Werewolves and teens shouldn’t mix! But what can Emmy do when she finds herself thrown head first into the center of it all. Can she handle the supernatural mess her life rapidly becomes or will she fight against the inevitable fate her heart desires?

Excerpt:
“That smart mouth doesn’t sit well with me,” he licked his lips. His eyes never wavered from mine.

I nibbled on my lower lip, just as a small smile graced the edges of my mouth. Oh yeah, my bravado was about ready to kick some ass. I think I kind of liked being a smart ass.

“What are you going to do about it Jack?” I inhaled a breath, taking in his warm, delicious scent. My throat went even drier than before. I practically stared holes into his face as I studied every tiny mark, every single scar on his perfectly flawed skin. He was gorgeous, with a little scar here, a little white patch there. His hotness could have left me breathless for days if I kept up my perusal any longer.

And then I blinked, Christ. I knew exactly what had to be done. I had to kiss him. I had to get this itch scratched and then I had to move on. His eyes darkened, his breath was warm and heavy over my face, and he licked his lips. I blinked. Holy-balls… He wanted to kiss me too.

That ever-present electricity running between us wouldn’t stop. If anything, it only increased our pull. I moved in; his lips touching my lips was all I wanted. I needed to feel again, feel it all with a boy who hated me, but apparently wanted to kiss me as badly.

Dryness on dryness soon changed to warmth on warmth, and when I pressed my mouth fully to his, his hands left my neck, and went to my waist. His fingernails dug into my sides and the son of a bitch pushed me away from him.

So there I was, my head tilted to the side, ready, willing, and able to do whatever the hell this moment led us too, and all he could do was chuckle. Yes. Chuckle. He was the biggest rat bastard.

Ever.

Exclusive excerpt:

Four hours later Emily wasn’t feeling so calm anymore. She sat in her intro to drawing class and stared at the guy standing next to her professor in disbelief. Jax. She rolled his name around in her mouth. The guy from the bar is in my art class.

“Since I know all of you are royally sick of drawing vases and flowers and fruit, I’ve got you a real live boy to practice with. Now, I know we’re not in a studio, but I’m looking to see what you can do in less than optimal conditions…” Professor Hacsz went on, explaining what she wanted from them.

Emily rolled her charcoal between her fingers, trying to calm the buzz rolling over her skin. Jax was the last person she ever expected to see in class. What are the odds? she wondered, quietly trying to not freak out.

He sat on the desk in front, hands casually clasped and smiling at the professor as if he hadn’t just turned her entire world upside down. Emily wasn’t sure if she was happy about it, or totally horrified. When he glanced at her, her mechanical pencil cracked. Dammit. She looked down, concentrating. Under her fingers the outer metal casing slowly melded back together. She had to shake out the charcoal and replace it with a new one, but at least it kept her busy for a few minutes. Surely when she looked up again he wouldn’t still be looking at her— Yeah, no such luck. He was staring at her hands. Shit!

She hid the pencil in her fist. Had he seen what she did? When she looked at him again, he had his eyes on the window, expression neutral. She relaxed minutely. He couldn’t have realized what had happened. He wouldn’t be so calm if he had. And at least fixing her pencil had soothed the worst of the tension running through her.

She grabbed her drawing pad and began to sketch, using short, sharp jerks to outline the angular lines of his shoulders. Her professor was still talking, giving instructions, the occasional nod as she wandered between the desks. Emily wanted to scream. Or hide. Or something, she wasn’t sure what, but instead, she sat there, filling in the oval of Jax’s head with details: the slightly tilted corners of his eyes, the loose waves of his hair. He wore a shirt with metal snaps today and she filled in the sparks of light that reflected from them, smudging with her fingers until she got her sketch just right. And all the while, he kept glancing over at her, eyes curious. Aware. She felt like a bug under glass: pinned. Vulnerable.

Reconnaissance

Excerpt:

A drone, as deep and low as the growl of a primordial beast, resonated in my gut and I yanked my hand away. My heart sped like someone had fired a starter gun to a race, and my chest tightened until I couldn’t breathe.

That blaring blasphemy wasn’t from my ship.

The sound tapered off, leaving me in silence. I stared at the bones, wondering if I’d imagined it, or if I should hide here in the ruins in case the sound came back.

What am I doing? I’m a team expedition leader, for crying out loud!

I pulled myself back together. Everyone else was attending the ceremony on the ship. The thick hull, designed to protect us from deep space, blocked all sounds from the outside world. I was the only one who would have heard it. The only one who could investigate. I thought about going back for help, but every second I delayed, the source of the sound could disappear. Besides, I didn’t want the credit taken away from me. Not this time.

I scrambled to the window and climbed over the ledge, throwing myself down so fast my ankles exploded in pain. Cursing, I hobbled up the embankment of the excavation site. The sound boomed around me, vibrating the crystals underneath my feet. I fell to my knees and covered my ears. It reminded me of warping metal, growling monsters, and screeching alarms all at the same time.

The sound came from the jungle. I pulled myself up the incline and peered over the edge. A dry, fiery breeze blew my hair back, and I looked above the rustling canopy.

My heart stammered then beat into a frenzy. A massive ring of a ship, twice as large as the New Dawn, hovered over the jungle. Spires jutted from the top and the bottom, like a two-sided pin cushion. Blinking reddish lights adorned the ends. The hull was a dull gray shield of impenetrable metal with no sight panels or markings of any kind.

The buzzing sound made my eardrums throb. I pressed my nose up against the crystal ledge and peered over as my whole body shook. The lowest spire, thick as a nuclear reactor, lengthened from the belly of the ship until the tip hovered a meter from the jungle canopy. A trap door opened, and a beam of white light seared a hole in the foliage. The smell of burnt vines choked my throat, and I cowered against the side of the ledge.

I have to warn the ship.

About the Author:

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation–favorite character was Data by far–and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be “a concert flutist” when she grew up. She majored in flute performance at the University of New Hampshire on a full scholarship, then secured two teaching jobs at a University and a local community music school. While playing in orchestras and teaching, stories popped into her head, and she used them to make the music come alive for her flute students. Her students said they were so good, she had to write them down! Maybe they were right, who knows? Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.

She is represented by Dawn Dowdle and writes sweet and adventurous fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary romance.

Top ten things you don’t know about me:

1.  Cotton or Silk?

Depends if I’m wearing them or someone else is!

3.  Plotter/pantser?

Shouting it from the rooftops! —PANSTERS RULE!

4.  Describe your workspace

Leather couch, feet up on coffee table, cats interfering with typing and huz yelling at the manager of the Detroit Tigers.  Harlie writes with Cartoon Network on.  She hates Spongebob to this day.  LOL!

5.  Sports fan or just tolerate it?

Fan. Spent a couple of years seeing Tigers/Astros/Padres catch, Brad Ausmus anywhere nearby. (Stop…I am not a stalker, I’m a ‘patron.’)  Pink here…sure, you go right ahead and believe that.  LOL!  I watched that backside when he was with the Astros, too.  *sigh*  I’m sure you have seen him without his shirt on, right?  *fans self*

6.  Who is your biggest influence on writing?

Tough one – it’s a tie between James Rollins and Brad Thor.  I love their continuing characters and clear action.

10.  What’s next for you?

Currently waiting for the edits for my next 1NightStand story, For Me, due from Decadent Publishing this fall and fending off the people in my head with at least a dozen works in progress!

THE ONE HE CHOSE – BLURB

A year after losing her beloved husband, Grace Witzler learns he left a special surprise for her. A fabulous getaway in the beautiful Canadian Rockies that includes a date with a mystery man arranged through Madame Eve’s 1NightStand dating service. She’s shocked and intrigued…what was Ben thinking?

Grace’s date is charming, handsome and about to find out whether the woman of his dreams will return his affection. He’s waited forever, but he’s reading to risk it all on a 1NightStand.

THE ONE HE CHOSE- EXCERPT

“Grace.” The deep voice worked its way into her consciousness.

She sighed in her haziness and clutched the imaginary hand resting on her tummy. Whoever or whatever held her carried a familiar scent, one that elicited trust and caring.

Out on the porch, the mountain air had chilled. Despite the comfort of the presence around her, her body responded with a shiver.

A hand slipped into the lace triangle of her thong, caressing the area between navel and Nirvana.

Definitely not a dream.

She blinked, slowly coming to life. The frightened tone of her inquiry shocked even her “Who are you?”

Relax.” His lips lovingly met her shoulder. “Ben sent me.”

He didn’t seem to have any malicious intent—well, at least not at the moment. And Madame Eve wouldn’t allow something hurtful to happen.

“What do you…?” The hand cupped her waxed-for-the-occasion pubic area. His callused digits followed a natural path. It’d been so long since someone had touched her in this manner, nearly two years. She didn’t blame Ben for the extended dry spell, only the disease which had dampened his interest and stamina.

“I want you to relax and let me make love to you. That’s what you want, isn’t it?”

So, this is how this Madame Eve stuff works.

With little thought, she relented to her physical loneliness. She closed her eyes and shoved the lace below her hips. The stranger assisted until her legs were completely bare. “Yes, please.”

He was strong, agile, and wonderfully gentle.

A warm, sincere, somewhat familiar voice tickled her ear. “Grace.”

She leaned into him, wanting to sigh in happy relief and cry in terrible sadness. His arms about her, she slowly turned into his embrace. She closed her eyes, waiting for the initial kiss.

Then, it came, gentle yet deep and although he was a stranger, she felt a profound connection, a silent conversation. She raised her hand to touch his cheek in encouragement. Blinking in the darkness, desperately wanting to see her soon-to-be lover, her eyes finally focused and the world came to an abrupt halt.

Review:

He He!  I got to read a “naughty” book.  Only Harlie doesn’t know that I read it off her Kindle.  Don’t tell.  OMG, know I know why Harlie raves about this series.  They are short, hawt and emotional stories that have me totally hooked now.  When I was signed up for the hop, I had no idea what author I was gonna get to spotlight and I’m super excited it was Ms. Burke.  She writes a highly emotional story that captured me from the start.

I’ve heard of dying spouses that try to fix up their respective spouses in situations like this and I’m not sure what I think about it all.  Ms. Burke makes sense of it all with her wonderful tale of Grace, Ben and Jake.  Jake has been in love with Grace since forever and was there for her when Ben got sick and passed away.  She never looked at Jake as anything as more than a friend, someone that helped her through the hard times and that special someone that made her laugh in her darkest time of her life.

Getting an invitation from Madame Eve for a week a way near the place that Grace and Ben had their honeymoon is bitter sweet.  Deciding why not, she packed her bags and went.  Ben thought of everything for her, just like he always did.  *sigh*  The IM messages between Grace and Madame Eve were funny.  Grace was a strong heroine for me and I can not even fathom what she went through with the death of her husband but I could understand the “why” she was skeptical on the whole idea that her husband had picked her “date” for the week.

I’m not sure what else to say except that I loved Ben, Grace and Jake.  Ben was a dream from beyond the grave.  He paid attention to his wife’s every want and need when he was with her.  Jake was the guy next door that waited and hid his true feelings from the only woman that he loved.  Grace didn’t know what to think at first but once she discovered that her “date” was Jake…the conversations between them were emotional, heartfelt and honest.  I truly felt connected with them even though the story was short.  🙂

Now that I’m completely hooked on the whole Madame Eve/1NS, I will be sneaking more of them off of Harlie’s Kindle.  Oh wait…I can just buy them on my own.  :p
