Enchanter by Kristy Centeno

Leah Parker is furious when she finds out she’s been paired up for a class project with deadly silent, tough as nails, and incredibly intimidating Brandon Morris. Though she’s known him for years, Leah has made it a priority to stay away from him for a reason. As they are forced to spend time together however, Leah comes to find that there is more to Brandon than what meets the eye.

When a series of unexpected events forces Brandon to reveal his true identity, Leah suddenly finds herself fighting to come to terms with who he is and with the fact that by fulfilling his destiny she will come to lose the only guy she’s ever loved. As a family secret is unveiled and old threats possess new risks, they both have to find the strength to do what is expected of them. Even if that means losing each other in the process.

Love brought them together. His bloodline threatens to pull them apart. Will Brandon choose duty over love? Or will other forces far beyond their control separate them first?

Excerpt:

Brandon tore his lips away from mine so he could explore my neck, nipping and nibbling as he traveled the length of it. Deliberately, gently, passionately, he kissed a path down my skin and paused only when he reached my naked shoulder. “So soft,” he murmured, the hoarseness of his voice forcing my body to break out in goose bumps.

My fingers intertwined in his hair, forcing the long locks out of the black bow keeping it neatly tied at the nape of his neck. As soon as it came loose, his dark hair cascaded around his face like a curtain, making him look like some exotic creature of the night.

“Brandon…” I glanced up at his pale blue eyes, admiring the beauty of them. “Kiss me… please.”

He immediately obliged, devouring my lips with so much intensity it caused my knees to wobble. Heat, fast and powerful, spread through my body in rapid sequences as our tongues playfully toyed with each other and our bodies touched. I moaned when the feel of his strong, hard, and warm body pressed against mine. I did enjoy his masculinity and how wonderful it felt to have his hands massaging my back.

Feeling the need to explore, I untangled my fingers from his long mane and slowly allowed my hands to glide down his neck, and to his upper torso where they paused just over his pectorals. The tips of my fingers slowly slithered over his hard-as-steel chest and there they lingered for a while, exploring, touching, and feeling. Ever so slightly, they lowered to his abs, which despite the jacket and white shirt, I detected to be just as defined as the rest of him.

My greedy fingers worked their magic over Brandon, who immediately groaned and pulled away from me. His breath was ragged, his eyes filled with lust, his body language tense.

“Leah… I…”

A movement over his left shoulder caught my attention and I no longer focused on him or on what he was saying.

“Brandon, I don’t think we’re alone anymore,” I murmured as another flash of whiteness rushed from one side to the other, some ten to fifteen feet from us. It was too dark for me to determine who it was, but I was certain of one thing: we were being watched.

Desperate to escape the promise of backwater living, Piper ditched her Alabama hometown and never looked back. That was almost two years ago. Now that she is out of a job and her bank account is running on fumes, she’s desperate to find a job, fast. She finds the break she is searching for when she lands a position at Bookish Temptations. After a brief but explosive encounter with a man she was never supposed to see again turns out to be the same man she will be bending over backwards to please, her every instinct tells her to run. But when running means leaving the life she has struggled so hard to create, Piper decides her only option is to continue working for the devastatingly sexy Tate Larson…even if it kills her.

 Review:

OMG.  An intelligently written book about two characters that I actually liked from the beginning.  Yes, Tate could be a douche but he was loveable in his own way.  Piper was a dream.  Smart, not willing to give up and falling in love with the man that she really shouldn’t have.

I will say that the trope of assistant falling for the boss has been done over and over but Ms. Valentine wrote in such a way that it wasn’t tired nor did I want to throw the Kindle at the wall.  Between the banter of Tate and Piper; Piper and her girlfriends and their own thoughts rambling through their heads…my emotions were all over the place.  I have girlfriends like Piper so I could so relate to their conversations and situations.  🙂

Tate was a dream.  Hot, sexy and a writer.  In fact, he might be the first hero that I have read that is a writer.  Nice job, Ms. Valentine.  I also appreciated the fact that this is a standalone story.  No cliffhanger, ended perfectly and while I didn’t read the first book in the series, I never felt lost when characters were introduced.  Everything makes sense to you while reading Piper and Tate’s story.

Also, can someone please tell why I loved the scene in the bathroom?  😉  It was hot, passionate and as much as I like the smexy times to have some sort of a build up, their hook up made complete sense.  Of course it was the perfect plot point for Tate and Piper but normally I don’t like that at all.  I completely melted into the couch when I read it.  I just worried that the smexy times would cool off and thankfully, they didn’t.

If you are looking for a great story about a tried and true trope of the assistant and boss falling in love…That First Kiss is for you.  Its not your grandmother’s Harlequin.  It’s an intelligent, well written story that will suck in from the beginning and have you swooning and sighing in the end.  I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Valentine.  I must remind Harlie of this…  🙂

2. OSH Prizes

As the final stop of the 2nd Craziest Blog Tour in the A Long Road To Love series, I’d like to review Carrie’s romantic choices so far. If you asked Carrie, she would say she’s only been around one man sufficiently to fall in love
Trent Framed

Yet I have thrown a great deal of men her way. I’ll admit, not all are winners, however, except for two, all behave marginally better than Trent, and I think two are better looking and in my opinion one would fit Carrie perfectly, if she’d only open her heart to the possibility.

Trouble is Carrie is like a train. Once you put her on a set of tracks she will run those track until a catastrophic wreck knocks her off course.

I’ve assembled a list of guys she knows well enough to compare them to Trent, so when disaster hits, I’ll be ready to offer her a better guy. Which would you choose for her?
MIWC Book TnS

miwc book 1 others

See what I mean. She has lots of choices, if she’d only open her eyes. And in book two she gets more choices, although I have to admit none of them are very good ones and some may be worse than Trent. Truth is, most the people she meets in Oh Stupid Heart (both male and female) worry me. They have agendas that could harm Carrie.

Okay, technically, we met Coco in book one, but in this book she’s serious trouble.
MIWC book2

Did you check out Ian’s painting? Be still my heart. I know he’s a seducer of women, but boy is he irresistible.

Jon is so nice I gave him my SkyRyders series (coming out next year) to claim as his. However, he’s married with four kids and a fun loving wife, Patty. So hopefully, nothing will go on there. I am totally against home wrecking.

Well, I think that’s all I can say about the series and Oh Stupid Heart. As you might have guessed, given all the pictures I’ve painted, I love the many characters in these books. I think you will too as long as you enter, knowing this is a LONG road to love and there are lots of life lessons Carrie must learn before seeing who she really wants to go through life with.

Who would you put her with? (You can say Trent, if you think he improves sufficiently by the end of the book.)

Book Two of: A Long Road To Love

Humorous Contemporary Disaster Romance

By

Liza O’Connor

Blurb:

Carrie Hanson is in love with a different species: Trent, a pampered, uber-rich socialite who’s also her boss. Everyone keeps telling her it’s a train wreck looking to happen, but her heart wants what it wants. So despite the billion and one reasons not to, Carrie commits to this inter-species relationship. But while she’s off being trained for her new job responsibilities, a beautiful ex fiancée is working hard to get Trent back and Carrie fired.

Excerpt:

As the train filled with lesser quality people all talking on their cell phones, the noise and cacophony of smells began to irritate Trent. If not for the pleasure of holding Carrie, he would have demanded the conductor stop the train and let them off so he could have his driver rescue them. The train barely picked up speed before it slowed down, stopped, and allowed more people on. They just kept coming and coming. His glare discouraged a few people from sitting on the other side of Carrie, but eventually an old, heavyset black woman collapsed in the seat with a sigh.

“Don’t normally get to sit,” she muttered, and released a heavy sigh of exhaustion. Her faded, crumpled, threadbare clothes looked as tired as she did.

The conductor stopped and demanded five dollars. She pulled out a coin purse and tried to pay him in quarters.

“No coins.”

The woman put a calloused hand to her forehead and shook her head. “It’s all I got.”

“Not my problem,” the conductor said.

“Take her fee out of the change you owe me,” Trent snapped. Why did the guy have to be such a jerk?

The guy clicked more paper then thrust a ticket into her coin-filled hand. Finally, he handed Trent three twenties.

“And a five,” Trent growled.

The conductor muttered softly and thrust his hand into his pocket and pulled out a five. He glared at Trent. “You’re only getting this, because of her.” He nodded at Carrie. “Otherwise, you’d pay a second service fee.” He handed Trent the bills and stormed off.

The old woman flashed Trent a weary smile, displaying brown and yellow teeth, which made him slightly nauseous.

His grandmother had always said “Never engage with the common people. Perform all charity at a distance.”

“Thank you for the ticket. They’re so expensive, especially since I got sick last month and needed medicine. I didn’t have any money left to buy a monthly ticket.”

“How much is a monthly ticket?” he asked.

“$125.00. But I don’t have it, so I’m paying ten dollars a day. And I only make sixty a night, forty once they take out taxes.”

“What do you do?”

“I clean an office building. Job starts at 8 p.m. and I have to be done by 5 a.m. with no excuses. If I don’t show, or I don’t finish, I get fired.”

He retrieved his wallet, culled two hundred, and added it to the change the conductor had returned. He passed it to the woman. “Here’s enough to buy the monthly ticket and a bit extra to put aside to buy medicine the next time you get sick.”

The woman studied the hundred dollar bills. “Are these real?”

“I assume so. I got them from the bank.”

The woman’s brow furrowed and handed them back to him, keeping the twenties and five. “I can’t afford to get arrested. I’ll lose my job.”

Never had a person refused his money before. It hurt his feelings and frustrated him. Damn it, I wanted to be charitable. Why can’t the damn woman just do her part?

Review:

As most know, I loved The Worst Week Ever.  Carrie stole my heart from the first page and she did again, Oh Stupid Heart.  Be warned though, this book is completely different from The Worst Week Ever.  Yes, there is still humor, dry wit, situations that you would think…NOT AGAIN but this one humanizes Trent more.  He tries to be charitable on the train and that backfires somewhat.  When he tries to be charitable to his friend Jon, it finally works.  Of course, he had a bit of help from Carrie and Mars, again.

Mars, Jack and Sam are back to help Carrie and Trent but my heart broke for Sam.  There is a secret that Jon shares with Trent that really through me for a loop.  😉  Great twist and explains alot of Sam’s resentment towards Trent but Sam deserves better.  He is still holding a candle for Carrie though.  In some ways, so does Mars but he views her as a somewhat savior to his own job with Trent.  Read the book and see if you agree with me.

I loved the introduction of Jon and Patty.  They are the ones that truly humanized Trent for me in this book.  I finally understood where Trent truly came from growing up and with talking to Jon, Trent realized that he could leave his former life behind and build a future with Carrie.  Plus, he’s a writer that I swear everyone had read and love except Trent.

The office situations were the best in the book for me.  Grant was a slime, Coco a complete bitch and Dan was the glue that made Carrie finally feel appreciated and  necessary when it came to her work.  Loved, loved how Carrie finally stood up for herself and got mad a Trent during a work situation too.  Of course, it broke her heart afterwards but I felt like Carrie was coming around to the fact that Trent didn’t always truly value her as an employee.  Sure, she was the glue that kept the company afloat but somehow in this book, Trent forgot about that.

This book read has fast as TWWE but it very well paced and of course, Ms. O’Connor can write dialogue with the best of them.  She makes her characters come alive on the page whether it be a word or maybe a raised eyebrow.  Plus, I still want Carrie’s house and garden.  😉

To answer Liza’s question of the right guy for Carrie…its hard to say really.  I liked Trent better in this book but I on the fence if he is truly the ONE for Carrie.  He’s about 80% there but he keeps reminding us of his track record.  I liked Joey, the cop in the first book but he was absent in this one.  If I had to pick, I would say Sam but then Carrie would be only a sloppy second for Sam and I want Sam to be truly happy in a relationship.  There is so much more to Sam that when you read this book, you will come to understand him more and more.  *sigh*

I highly suggest that read the series in order to understand all the characters and situations that Carrie and Trent go through.  Ms. O’Connor has written a brilliant tale about two different species (her words) that somehow find love but that road is long and the journey isn’t complete yet.

Love’s Intensity

by Cassandra Ulrich

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Brad loves fast horses, cars, and bikes.  Life would be perfect if his stepmother could only mind her own business.  Instead, his father hired a longtime friend and her family to work in their home, turning his world into a feudal mess.
He wants to hate the new arrivals and it doesn’t help that Kressa, daughter of the newcomers, is the most gorgeous girl he’d ever laid eyes on.  With a scent that draws him to her, Kressa causes him more internal conflict than he ever dreamed possible.  He falls for her so deeply, he tells her a secret he’d never even told his best friends – that he’s training to be a ninja warrior.
Kressa adores her country and loves hanging out with her many cousins.  News of the move to Massachusetts comes as a shock to her.  She refuses to be happy in this new place working as a servant for a rich man and his mean son, who had the nerve to be cute.  And why does her skin tingle every time her hand brushes against his?
Despite her efforts, she finds herself desperately longing for a friendship with the one boy who scowls at her.  Matters are only made more complicated when his family and hers clash. When he goes on a dangerous mission, she wonders, will he return so she can tell him he’s won her heart or will their families manage to keep them apart?
Excerpt Four:
Brad rode Silver Bullet alongside Kressa and Gentle Rider so the horses faced each other upon his approach.  He gazed into Kressa’s eyes, longing to learn something new about the girl who lived in his house.  Brad removed his riding glove and reached over to brush Kressa’s hair away from her face so he could touch her cheek.  She did not shrink away.  His fingertips tingled where her skin met his.
So beautiful.  Brad’s heart pumped a little faster and his mind swirled.  Does she feel drawn to me too?  He shook his head slightly.  “We should go back now,” Brad said tenderly, realizing once again that the warmth he felt when he touched Kressa also did something to his heart.  It was better not to remain alone.  He wondered if Kressa would ever admit whether she experienced any affection toward him.  He found her hard to read sometimes.
Brad pulled on his glove, led the way back through the forest, and headed for the stable.  After brushing, feeding, and watering all four horses, Brad and Kressa strolled back to the house.  “Great lesson today.  I think before long you’ll be able to go out on your own.”
“Really?  That would be great.  How many more lessons do I need?” She said eagerly.
“I would imagine one or two more.”
They both laughed at the good news.  At that moment, Kressa’s dad appeared around some shrubs at the base of the hill. His face held a fiery red glow.
“Kressa, get to the house right now,” Mr. Morales said grabbing her arm and pushing her toward their apartment.  “I don’t know what you were thinking today taking her through those woods, but I don’t like it.”
“Sir, there’s wide open space to run the horses on the other side of the trees.  I wasn’t trying to seduce her,” Brad said, feeling some guilt for touching her cheek earlier.
Mr. Morales shot Brad a fierce look and took Kressa away.  She followed, pleading with her father to let her go and trying to convince him nothing happened.  Kressa and her father began speaking in Spanish, so Brad could no longer comprehend what was being said.  Brad headed back to his room in anguish over what he just witnessed.  He picked up the handkerchief and rubbed it on his cheek.  He was sorry for causing her so much trouble.
Over the next few hours, Brad spent time on his laptop looking up home schooling rules.  He gathered all the information he could and went looking for his father.  Brad and his dad needed to do a lot of preparation if Kressa were to start school at home in a week.  Finding his father in the office, Brad presented him with the draft for a lesson plan needed. It had to be submitted to the school administration.
Dinnertime proved tense for Brad, and he didn’t doubt it was for Kressa as well.  He avoided looking at her as much as possible, not because he experienced nervousness concerning their interaction earlier in the day, but because he did not want Kressa’s father to take it out on her.  She seemed stiff whenever she served Brad a side dish.  He knew her reaction was due to her father keeping a close eye on them all evening.  Brad wanted to talk to his new friend, but knew it would be better if he waited until morning.
Review:
 Wow, this book has a lot going on it but in a good way.  What would you do if found out that the “help” had a past with the very people that you worked for?  That’s what Brad and Kressa face in the book.  Brad’s dad was best friend’s with Kressa’s mom growing up and that sit well with Brad’s stepmom.    Loved that little conflict in the book.  Kept the adults interesting and not just window dressing in the book.  Too often parents in YA books are forgotten about or worse, just window dressing.
Brad is the all-American boy that loves horse and just being a teenager.  Bring in a truly Mexican young woman, Kressa and those two couldn’t be more different.  I liked the dialogue in the beginning of the book that Brad and Kressa had.  I instantly connected with them and liked them.  Forced to be together all the time including school, its hard for them not to be friends and in the end fall for each other.  But this story isn’t just about Brad and Kressa, its also about their parents and the intensity of the relationship between Brad’s dad and Kressa’s mom.  It brought the whole story to a more well rounded read for me.
Something else that I truly liked about the book where the Christian undertones for me.  Yes, I do read inspirational/Christian books.  🙂  Love’s Intensity isn’t just about the growing attraction between Brad and Kressa but also about the past and ultimately the future of these two families.  The prejudice and misunderstandings are well written and realistic.  I truly did like all the characters in the book.  Each brought something to the story and made it better.
Of course, I like nothing better than a realistic interracial relationship and this one had it in spades.   Brad and Kressa fought their relationship growing between and the author did a great job with that, plus there is a ninja…Yes, you will have read the book to find out about that.
If I had a compliant, it would be the length of the book.  It was a bit too long but the book just kept getting better and better so I didn’t mind it after awhile.  I did have to take breaks and talk to Harlie about it.  🙂  I highly recommend Love’s Intensity for everyone that wants to read a feel good book about two different families coming to together and learning to live with each other and watch their children fall in love.
