Anna thought life was going to be awesome.  She was right…and wrong.

Won her dream job acting in a hit TV series.  Check. Working with her best friend.  Check. The set’s haunted and she’s in the middle of a supernatural war.  Uh, check?

Anna Rose Ellington is sixteen and living in Hollywood, hoping to be a star. Anna just landed a major role on Ghost House, TeenTV’s new fall drama.  A show promising to be so hot, Meg Sweet (the reigning teenage diva), signed on for the lead, and Adam Lewis (international rock sensation) is a principal player.

Her dreams are falling into place until she gets on set and begins questioning her sanity.  It’s true she has an unusual dream life, where once in a while her dreams literally come true.  But it’s been a while.

On top of her dreams not staying put in her brain, including the guy she’d been dreaming of for years, the house they’re filming in, Gold Manor, might actually be haunted.

But that’s the least of her worries.

Excerpt #1 from Gold Manor Ghost House, by Merry Brown

Prologue

As a special treat on this, my 11th birthday, Aunt Melinda invited me for a sleepover.  The promise of pizza, painting toe nails, and having the attention of my favorite person in the world, all to myself, was the perfect way to celebrate. I remember sitting on the dusty rose laminate countertop of her kitchen as she kneaded the dough.  She listened as I told her about school and the drama of the playground.  I remember her strange reaction as I recounted a vivid dream I had about a boy with an English accent, dark curly hair, and jade eyes. Her hands dripping with tomato sauce and chest covered in flour, she hugged me, holding on tightly.  I was trying to figure out why she was acting so strangely when a heavy knock on the front door broke the moment. I remember the look in her eyes as she made me promise to stay out of sight in the kitchen, no matter what I heard or what happened.  She made me promise, yet again, to never tell the secret she made me keep.  She knew I didn’t understand what the big deal was, but I promised. “Swear, on my life,” her voice too urgent. “Swear.” That was the last word she ever heard me say. I heard the door open from my hiding place under the sink. I heard her gasp in surprise. I heard a shot and her fall to the ground screaming, and a rough, low voice say, “Check.” I heard her cries turn to gurgling. Fear ruling my brain, I had to see what was going on.  Creeping out, yet remaining hidden, I looked. I saw her on the floor, bleeding. I saw a tall, broad man standing over her, smiling. I saw this man bend down, rip out, and eat her heart. I saw Aunt Melinda standing in the doorway as pale as a ghost… and on the floor, dead.

Review:Gold Manor Ghost House Book Cover

I’m not sure about my ability to pick books anymore to read.  Every YA paranormal that I have reviewed lately has been the bomb but for some reason, this one left a few unanswered questions for me.  Overall, I really liked the book and the premise of the television show is great, too.  I love stories that have ghosts in them but this story has much more than ghosts in it.  You must read it to find out what I’m talking about.  🙂

The beginning of the book (read above) sets the tone for Anna’s future and OMG, Adam.  *faints*  I’m a sucker for an English accent.  But I digress.  Some parts of the book were confusing at first, but overall the world building is believable.  Just took awhile to get there.  I really liked Anna and she was relatable as a strong female heroine.  I did feel bad for Corey though.  I’m not on anyone’s team yet but my heart did go out to Corey with his unrequited love for Anna.  Adam is mystery and I can’t wait to see what his TRUE story is all about.  😉

I also liked that house itself was a character.  Not many authors can make an object a character but Ms. Brown did.  Also, what really is Anna?  Again, a question left somewhat unanswered but I will definitely read the next book in the series to find out.  I kept turning the pages to see what was going to happen and felt somewhat bereft when the book was over.  It was definitely a good vs evil story but exactly who is evil and who is bad?  Again, questions that I needed answered but didn’t get.  I’m weird sometimes in my paranormal stories.  I like to know straight away who is who, what, where, why but I got confused.

I would definitely recommend this story to anyone over 14 years old.  It’s an easy read with great pacing with the unanswered questions.   While some people would never the finish the series because of that one aspect, I can’t wait to return and find out more.

CHAPTER ONE, Part I

It seemed like a good idea at the time.
My office, like most modern offices, cranked the air
conditioning down to Arctic proportions during the summer months. Consequently,
we workers arrived in the morning dressed in sandals and sleeveless tops,
donned heavy sweaters upon reaching our desks, and ended up shivering by noon.
Ironically, when our workday ended we were hit by a wall of oppressive heat the
moment we stepped outside the main doors. No, this wasn’t a flawed system in
the slightest.
That day, I wasn’t having it. I had the grand idea of
spending my lunch hour outside, away from the icy wind stiffening my fingers
and chilling my neck. After I unwound myself from the afghan I kept in my desk
(and only used in the summer months), I gathered up my lunch and my phone and
headed out for an impromptu picnic in my car.
What I hadn’t considered was that the office runs the air
conditioning so cold because it was, well, hot outside. Very hot, in fact. So
hot that the cheese was melting in my sandwich and the lettuce looked like
something that had washed ashore months, maybe even years, ago. I was parked in
the shade and had taken down my car’s convertible top, but I still couldn’t
manage to get comfortable. I’d already shed my sandals and cardigan, which left
me wearing my sundress and…
Dare I?
I glanced around the parking lot of Real Estate Evaluation
Services, the ‘go-to firm for all your commercial real estate needs’, according
to the brochures. No one, human or drone, was taking a noontime stroll, and, by
virtue of my being on the far side of the lot, no cars were near mine. Most of
my coworkers didn’t even have cars, so the lot was rarely more than half-full.
What was more, from where I sat, I couldn’t even see the office.
I dared.
I took a deep breath and channeled my inner wild woman, then
leaned the seat back and slipped off my panties. Removing that small bit of
cotton made an incredible difference, and the heat became somewhat bearable.
Enjoyable, even. Was that a breeze?
Ignoring my decrepit sandwich, I fully reclined the seat,
set the alarm on my phone, and closed my eyes. A nap. Now that would make today
bearable.
***
Suddenly, he is there.
Here.
Kissing me, holding
me.
I know I’m dreaming,
because he’s perfect. His lips are soft but insistent, his hands gentle. I
glide my fingers across his back, feeling thick cords of muscle, before sinking
my fingers into his hair. It’s superfine, like cobwebs, and when I crack an
eyelid, I learn that it’s silver. Not gray or white, but the elegant hue of
antique candlesticks and fine flatware. Cool.
I squeeze my eyes shut
again, not wanting the dream to end any sooner than it has to. He kisses me
once more, and I can’t help melting against him. His hand travels up my leg, up
past my hip… shit! No panties!
I try twisting away,
but he already knows. I feel his mouth stretch into a smile, and he moves to
nuzzle my neck. “What’s your name?” he murmurs.
“Sara,” I
reply. “Yours?”
“Micah.” By
now, his hands have traveled to my waist, and he slides one around to stroke
the small of my back. “Why did you summon me, Sara?”
“I didn’t,”
I protest. “I don’t know how.” I would say more, but he nibbles a
trail from my neck to my shoulder, and pushes my dress to the side. As for me,
I let him.
Micah raises his head,
and I get a good look at him for the first time. His eyes are large and dark
gray, like thunderheads, his features chiseled into warm caramel skin, and his
unruly mop of silver hair seems to float around his head. He wears an odd,
buff-colored leather shirt, made all the odder in this heat, and matching leather
pants and boots. Boots?
“You did summon
me,” he insists. “My Sara, you must tell me why.”
“Does it
matter?” I ask. I pull him back to me, kissing him with all the passion
I’ve never felt with anyone during my waking hours. Micah kisses me back, fingers
deftly unbuttoning my dress while his other hand rubs my lower back. I’ve never
felt so free, so alive as I do in Micah’s embrace, and I have no intention of
rushing this. None at all.

Excerpt:

Luggage backs up, causing one bag to fall off the machine. Angry travelers glare at me, as if I’ve made it my mission in life to make them late. Only one person doesn’t make me feel like a total jerk. He looks like a cowboy with his wide-brimmed brown leather hat, pointy boots and belt buckle. I suck in a breath when we make eye contact, his blue eyes two shades darker than mine. This is the kind of man writers dedicate romance novels to. Broad chested with ropes of muscles under his shirt, strength earned from real work not a gym, skin sun-kissed and glowing. He smiles at me and my knees go weak.

Le sigh.

Feeling the heat rush to my face, I nod my head in my most regal fashion and turn away as the scrawny 20-something guy working behind the x-ray machine asks me to follow him so he can inspect my bag.

He steps to the side and opens my red carry-on, shuffling through my iPad, a change of clothes and other staples I was told to always carry with me in case my luggage was ever lost. There are perks to being one of the youngest in a family of world travelers.

My jaw drops when he pulls out a gallon sized plastic baggie and dumps the contents—items I’ve never seen before in my life—onto the counter. Holding up a pair of red G-String panties with a matching bra, if that slip of silk can be called a bra, and a handful of—oh my God—condoms?

He smirks at me and reads aloud the note that’s in the baggie. “Winter, Have some fun this summer. Here’s a starter sex kit to help you out. All my love, your favorite cousin, Daring.”

I want to die.

I want the floor to open up and swallow me, or lightning to strike me dead.

I want them to arrest me, just so I can get away from the dozens of eyes taking in my humiliation.

I fight the urge to tell them I have a bomb, or maybe that I am the bomb. Or to tell them I’m a drug mule. Anything to divert attention from the most embarrassing moment of my entire life.

And then I remember the hot cowboy.

Who’s standing behind me.

Who heard and saw everything.

My cheeks, I can already feel, are a flaming red. I probably look like my head is about to explode. I wish it would, so I won’t have to live in this moment any longer.

An older woman, probably the supervisor, grabs the note and the panties from the jerk staring at me. “I think you’ve sufficiently searched this bag.” She nods sympathetically at me and shoves Daring’s gift back under my clothes, zipping my suitcase shut. “Sorry for the inconvenience, ma’am. You can take your belongings and head to your gate now.”

From Chapter 4: Cade

Kiss Me in Paris by Kimberly Kinrade & Dmytry Karpov

Paris—the city of artists and dreamers. Being here is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. So why do I still feel so out of place?

I don’t belong in Texas, running my dad’s business. And if I don’t belong in the city, pursuing my career, then where do I belong? Where will I ever find the peace that’s been missing from my life for so long?

My dad’s voice echoes in my mind. “What’s bothering you, kid?” He always asked me that when I was young, and I never had an answer for him.

I still don’t.

The suitcase sits nearly empty on my bed, save for one last item. I pull out the envelope, weathered by years and tears but forever unopened. The familiar scrawl across the front, just the one word, Goodbye. I run my thumb along the seal, wondering, not for the first time, what words he could have written that would make a difference, that would make the ache of his loss easier to bear.

But I don’t open it. I’ll never open it. Instead I slip it into my pillow as memories of the past flood me.

The mocking.

The pain.

The end.

“What’s bothering you, kid?” Dad’s voice whispers through me again. At least this time I have an answer, a way to act on the anger crashing through me.

I can’t go back and right the wrong done so long ago, but I can right a recent wrong, and dag nab it, will it feel good.

Pulling on my boots, hat on head, I lock up my room and seek the object of my righteous rage.

I pause, staring at the door to Winter’s room as if I could see through it. She and her roommate went out; I heard them leave. Her pale face and eyes the color of a frozen lake, haunt me. Eyes filled with tears when that asshole stepped on her small hand, so delicate. I held it as it turned blue, swelling in pain.

Pulling myself from her door, I hunt the hallway looking for Rodney. I don’t know what their history is, and I don’t care. No one deserves to be treated that way. I’ve seen guys like him before, known them all my life, and I’ve never backed down from putting jerks like him in their place.

I’m not about to start today.

It’s not because of the girl, I’m sure of that. She’s beautiful, sure. And funny, in an offhanded way. But that’s irrelevant. I’m doing this because it’s the right thing to do.

I spot him just outside of our dorms, leaning against a tree. Or rather, pinning a girl against a tree as he does what I can only assume is his version of flirting.

The girl in question doesn’t appear to enjoy his attentions, if the bored droop to her face is any indication.

Rodney’s not a small guy, probably played football back home, but I’ve got several inches and a lot more hard muscle on my side.

I pull him from the girl, who looks wide-eyed at me before scampering off, and grab the front of his shirt, glaring down at him. “I don’t know why you like tormenting girls. I don’t even want to know. But you’ll leave Winter alone. Got it?”

My face is inches from his, close enough that I can smell the alcohol on his breath.

He laughs, spraying me with his saliva. “You think she doesn’t like having me around? Guess you don’t know what a slut she is.”

Growling, I slam him against the tree.

He groans, but offers another cocky grin. “If you want my advice, stay away. She’ll spread her legs easily enough, but you’ll regret ever sticking—“

I’m done listening.

I knee him in the groin. His mouth opens, a high-pitched yelp escaping as he collapses on the ground. “This is me politely telling you to back the hell off Winter and leave her alone.”

The Demon Side Series

Heaven Leigh Eldeen

The Demon Side (The Demon Side Series, #1)The Demon Side - Cover

Blurb:  “Every kid has problems. Every kid has even more problems when they move to a new home. But when a kid with problems moves to a new home that has a Demon living inside it—look out!

Etta’s world is about to spin out of control when she encounters her new roommate—and Rahovart, that ancient trickster, is in for a few surprises too. So don’t mind all the crashing and rumbling; that’s just the normal noise Angels and Demons make when they’re fighting an epic war in the attic.

One thing’s for sure: Etta and Rahovart will have to go through Hell to Heaven and back again before that old Victorian home in Quantico Town finally quiets down… ”

Excerpt – The Demon Side:

Etta plopped back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. I wished I could hear her thoughts. Her father had just admitted to being a murderer for all practical purposes, though that was not how I viewed him. I truly believed John only tried to save the village, but his fervor and some help from a desperate Alastor, turned what should have been a heroic act into a bloodbath. Many men have unknowingly fallen from grace in the name of the greater good. Now, hopefully Etta would see that her father was just the victim of blurred lines between good and evil.

“What are you thinking?” I asked as I lay down next to her on the bed.

“Can a person still go to Heaven even if they’ve killed someone?”

“Well, I’m not in the business of getting people to Heaven, Etta. That’s the last place I want them to go,” I reluctantly replied.

“Even if it were me?” Etta stared hard at me with watery eyes, looking right into my blackened soul. I never gave much thought to where her soul would go, except to stop her from mistakenly giving it to me.

“That is a choice for you to make. I can’t force you to choose a side. I can only put the temptations in front of you.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“What do you want me to say? I want to see you burn in the depths of Hell? You’ll never hear that from me. Only you and your actions can decide where you go when you leave this world.”

“I would go if it meant I could be with you, you know.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” As much as I would have loved for that to be the case, her comment angered me. I couldn’t imagine a person like her becoming something like me.

“I know that when you’re around I feel safe nothing could ever hurt me. I get butterflies in my stomach when you touch me. I know your soul, Ra. I don’t know how, but I know. I knew it the second I saw you. You weren’t meant for this existence. You fought for good once, and I’m certain you will again.” Etta was strong in words. She spoke with solid confidence. She described what I felt.

The Human Side (The Demon Side Series, #2)The Human Side - Cover

Blurb:  From above, Etta’s life seems to be calming down in the town of Quantico, Virginia, but with every passing moment away from his love, Rahovart finds the emptiness unbearable.

After redeeming himself once again as an Arch, Rahovart is still unable to let his past go. Needing to be near Etta, he strikes a deal with Father—except it turns into a mission with great consequences.

With Arch Angel Gabriel in tow, Rahovart sets out to prove himself worthy of Etta’s love, only to face discouragement from Etta’s father, John, and her new boyfriend, Tristan—on top of the threats made to Etta. Would he be able to protect her if she no longer remembered him or shared the love the once held so dearly?

One thing’s for sure: The past, with all of its secrets and lies will come back to haunt them all.

Excerpt – The Human Side:

“I have two solutions, but the choice of which to accept is up to you. There is plenty of time to think about these choices, but remember, whatever you choose, you will be bound to it.”

“What are the choices Father?”

“Your first choice is an exchange. Swear never to interfere with Etta’s life again, and all you have lost will be restored, including rank and principalities. If and when she returns to Heaven, her memories will be restored. Break the promise at any time for any reason, your soul shall be sent to Purgatory and Etta’s Guardians will be removed from her detail. As for the second choice, go to Earth in human form with no wings, no abilities. Show Etta the same cruelty and disdain as when the Demon Rahovart met her. Etta fell in love with a Demon once. It should be quite interesting to see if she can do it again. She must profess her love without coaxing or prompting. There can be no mention of our deal or what lies beyond the veil, including who you truly are, where you come from. Fail to abide by the rules or rekindle her affections, your days shall be spent on Earth with no recollection of life beyond the veil. But, succeed, and you can return home with the added benefit of continuing your relationship with her. Visit her anytime as long as it does not interfere with work.”

I listened intently as Father explained my options. Both carried heavy consequences if I failed to abide by their guidelines. He’d given me a life or death decision to make, but I didn’t need time to think. Without thought or question, I gave Father my answer.
